Carbon Black is used primarily as a reinforcing filler for rubber, which accounts for 91% of demand. Tires accounted for 69% of total volumes in 2007, while nontire rubber goods, mainly mechanical goods such as hoses, belts and rollers, accounted for 23% of demand. Special blacks (used in nonrubber outlets) account for the remaining 9%. Carbon black is derived from the incomplete combustion of petroleum feedstocks, primarily decant oil from fluid catalytic cracking of gas oils to produce gasoline; ethylene tar or ethylene cracker residue, which are obtained from steam cracking naphtha/gas oil; and raw coal tar oil, creosote and anthracene oil resulting from coal coking. Furnace black accounts for 98% of global production, with thermal black (from natural gas) and actylene black (from acetylene) accounting for most of the remainder.
